Turmeric's appearance is similar to that of ginger. Like ginger, it can be eaten fresh, or dried and ground to a fine powder to become a spice.
Turmeric has a warm, slightly bitter, earthy flavor. On the nose, the spice is slightly peppery, with woody and sometimes milky touches. Much less lemony and pungent than ginger, its flavors are released during long cooking. Turmeric is consumed for its subtle, diffuse aromas, as well as for its intense yellow-orange color. This is how it gives its color to Indian curry powders and masalas.
Native to South-East Asia, and cultivated since ancient times in southern India, our store carries turmeric from an Indian producer.
Turmeric has a subtle taste. It's therefore easy to incorporate into a wide range of dishes and culinary preparations, without having to worry about dosage. Beware, however, of its strong coloring power - your hands and worktop are likely to remember it!
